There are at least two operations that can be performed on any storage media drive. They include the read and the write operation. The read operation is used for the accessing of the data that is already over the tape drive. The write operation is used to store the information or the data over that tape drive. The write operation is also called as the recording of the data or the information over the tape drive.

Primarily there are two storage or more specifically two recording technologies that can be used with the tape drives. One among them is the Helical Scan recording procedure and the other is the Linear Serpentine recording procedure. These technologies that are used for the recording of the data over the tape drives are employed on the platforms that are usually referred to as the midrange.

Each of the methods is characterized in such a way as to draw the tape across by the recording head. The recording head is used to record the information over the tape reel. This data or the information is again configured on the tape drive. The first method that is the helical scan recording procedure is a process where in the tape and the head used for the writing of the data meet at an angle that is certain, in such a way that the data is recorded in the diagonal stripes in only one single forward pass.

The heads that are known as the read or the write heads are mounted over drum. This drum rotates at a very high speed. The rotation of the drum is such that the tape itself is pulled and it slowly moves, gently across the heads that are spinning.

The important thing to notice is that the rotating head or the rotating drum is in a position to achieve the velocity of the head or the tape that is needed for the recording of the data accurately. The data is written or recorded accurately to the with the bit densities that are higher and linear in nature. This is in comparison with the methods that are longitudinal in their nature. The main reason for the development of the technique that is the helical scan is the video recording application in the Video Cassette Recorder. In the VCR’s the main reason for this is the data density.

Translating the technology to the world of the data storage was done by the Sony Corporation. The tapes that are helical scan can store the data in large capacities. The other technology that is used for the recording of the data over the tape drives is the linear serpentine recording. The important feature of the Linear Serpentine Recording is that the read or the write heads is in the stationary position where as the data is written to the tracks that are running with the length of the tape that is moving. When one track is completely written, the head drops to the next track.

The recording is then done in the opposite direction. The traversal of the tape is also required in the linear technologies that are associated with the tape drive. The traversals are usually back and forth. In other words the traversals of the tape have a path of S shape. Also another point worth mentioning is that this type of the recording consumes a lot of power.

The data access rate is also slower because the technique involved is that the tape should be re-wounded completely. It requires a large quantity of the data, since it has the density that has a nature of low recording in nature. They require a single reel cartridge.
