> Tape Drive Future There are many media storage devices that are available in the scenario; apart from the tape drive. The hard disk drive and the floppy disk also play an important role in the backup and archival industry segment. Also many new data storage devices like the CD ROM and the DVD disks are also onto the picture. After considering all these things on the storage devices, it seems as if the future of the tape is no more. Many people have even considered the tape to be dead thing few years back. But the major advantages regarding the tape drive over the other form of storage devices are as listed below. These advantages are considered as the most significant ones in comparison with the other forms of storage devices. The most important ones are listed below: The tape drive does not require the power for its self. In contrast to this; most of the disk drives or the storage media devices require the power for themselves. And that too, the power should be a continuous supply. Any interruptions in the power supply can to the effect damage the device itself, and ultimately the data within it. For example the power consumption is also most important thing that needs to be taken care of. The other storage devices like the newly launched Seagate 120 giga byte hard disk drive require a power of about 13 watts. Consider the situation where in you need to use 400 tera bytes of the storage device. Imagine the power consumption that would be associated along it. The important advantages that are related with the tape drives are considered as the lower error rates. The other storage media devices including the SCSI and the ATA also have a bit error rate. The bit error rate is around 10 to the 14th. But in the case of the tape drive the bit error rate for the enterprise usage have an order of the magnitude in the case of the error rate that is more reliable as compared to the SCSI or the ATA drives. The magnitude of the error is an important issue for the data storage solutions in an enterprise environment. Since the data reliability itself is an important issue in any corporate environment. Most of the businesses are dependent on their data. The tapes are even more shock resistant than the other storage media. The hard disk drives and the floppy disks are easily susceptible to the damage. The degree of the shock in case of the tape is much higher than in the case of the hard disk drives. The external casing these days being provided over the tape drive also provides better support to magnetic tape that holds the data over it. In brief declaration the tape drives provides better shock proof in contrast with the other back up storage devices. As in the consideration of the topic; at least for the next few years the tape drives will continue to be used for the back up and the archival process of the data in many corporate environments. The important aspect concerning the tape drives is that it is also much cheaper than the other storage media. The other storage devices in comparison with the tape drives are also slightly costlier than the tape drives. Also the shelf life is more in the tape drives as claimed by the manufacturers. They claim a shelf life of at least 30 years for the tape drives. |
