> Tape Drive Formats The storage drives or any media that is used for the storage of the data; has one or the other formats. For example the hard disk drive has the format of the disk drive as the FAT or the NTFS etc. Similarly the tape drive also has some sort of drive format. The computer forensic experts are more familiar with the words to recover the data from the tape drives. The formats that are available in the tape are the LTO or the DLT. The LTO stands for the linear Tape Open and the DLT stands for the Digital linear Tape. The format of any storage device is much important because format is used in the services computer forensics. The computer forensics determines the facts associated with any storage media. The process in any forensic determination of the format involves the description that is provided below. The contents and the history of the tape are necessary for any forensic analysis. The job of the examiner is to extract the data accurately. Usually the emails and the documents and the log files including he accounts and the records are examined in detail. The format of the tape can be considered similar to that of a language. It is the data that is laid in the format. A language is a set of rules that is already defined for the purpose of communication. Here the communication is between the logical and the physical mappings of the storage device. The computer terminology is in reference to the bits, bytes, words records and the blocks that actually lead to the files. When the contents of the tape are examined the on the terminal, and the verification of the format is considered then the person who is doing so is called as the tape dump. There are some specific or particular software that is available for the purpose of examining the data in terms of the format of the tape. The software provides the access to the tape format. With the help of this software the format of the tape can be cracked. The data from the format can then be extracted. The cracking of the format of the tape is not an easy task, but requires the careful understanding of the structural organization of the tape. In other words it can be termed as the challenge for the person who is involved in the work. The cracking of the software is done by identifying or recognizing the pattern inside the data. The format consists of the data which is laid out. The structure of the format of the tape is the information that is set up in a coded manner. The encoding is so designed that the software specially used for the purpose of extracting the data needs to decode the information or the data present. The process understanding is done by the reading program. The format apart from the data also contains the information of the files. The attributes that are related to the files are also there. These attributes include the author of the file, when the file was saved, the date and the time of creation, the date and the time of the modification etc. It also contains the name of the files and the block sizes etc. The text segment or the contents of these files are encoded in the format that is supported by the ASCII. This is usually operating system dependent. The EBCDIC is used for the encoding of the text segment of the files in the Mainframes etc. The primarily concern regarding the format is the storage of the document in the electronic form. |
