> Schedule Backups on Tape Drives It is important to have backup of the data that is considered as sensitive. So if we decide to have the backup of any data then it can be either manually backup or even an automated backup. In the case of the automated backups; it is possible to schedule the backup. The scheduling of the backup is not only possible in the automated backups but also in the manual backup procedures. If the schedule of the backup is not finalized then it is also possible that the data might get corrupted. The information that is provided here is an overview of the scheduling of the backup on any general tape drive. As an example consider the back up tool from the Windows NT operating system. The back up tool that is presently available in the Windows NT operating system is the Ntbackup.exe. This backup utility is so designed to work with the Removable Storage Manager or the RSM. The RSM is used to manage the media when there is a backup or the archival session. The effective measure is that, if there is a library of the tape drive which is capable of holding several tape drives then due to the RSM; it is also possible that the tapes could be mounted or dismounted. The automated backups have the capability to mount the tape drives. It is also possible for the tape drive to dismount the tape drives also. This is done automatically by the scheduled backup program call. The backups may also be unattended in nature. The possibility of the unattended backups is that the RSM can load a correct tape drive. The possibility is that the tape drive may be overwritten or even it may append. This all is dependent on the fact of selecting the backup options. If there a library that is considered as a stand alone library of the tape drive; then it is possible to even schedule the backups. The tape library has the feature that it requires the user to unload or load the media in the manual form. The nightly backups may also be provided in an unattended form. A small condition which can be considered for the nightly unattended backups is that provided the data the user is backing up should fit the single tape drive. If due to some reasons the data or the information is unable to fit in the single tape; then in such a situation the NT Backup tool takes the charge. It now pauses the media. Then the back up tool also asks for a new media that is considered as a prepared media. There are usually methods that a user can utilize to perform unattended backups. They are as follows: The first method is called as the Managed method and the second method is called as the Unmanaged method. In the Managed method is it is possible to manage the media. Also in this method it is possible to ensure that the tape drive is proper and appropriately used. The proper tape should be there in the tape drive always. This should be cross checked before the backup overwrites the tape. And more importantly this is the recommended method. The other method that is the Unmanaged method can be utilized for the current backup. In this case it will overwrite the tape that is in the stand alone tape drive currently. Usually this method is quite easier in the implementation. But at the same time the backup may even overwrite the data that is considered as the critical, if the tape is not present in the drive before the backup is scheduled.
