> Storing Data on Tape The storing of the data over the tape drive is a sequential process. Since the tape drive needs to be accessed in a sequential manner. The only major disadvantage of the tape drive is that the data should be stored and accessed on to it in a sequential manner. It is a time consuming process. Usually the databases are written over the tape by the FITTP. Even there are about three standard formats that are named as the FITS standards. The IEEE standard format for is the 32 bit floating point format. Generally the dynamic range limitation is non existent in the format of this type. Even the bit manipulation technique is also not there in any of the present generation computer systems. This is because the usage is in the form of the IEEE floating in many cases internally in the computer systems. There are two formats available that are integer in nature. The two of the integer formats that are available include the 16 bit integer format and the 32 bit integer format. In the case of the 32 bit integer format there is an issue of the dynamic range. The other issues that are related to the 32 bit integer format are no saving in space and the rescaling. Where as, in the 16 bit integer format; the usage is primarily dependent on the signed two’s complement for the representation of the data. The range of such numbers is limited to about -32768 to 32767. The FITTP has a task to find the max min in the image. Then the process is to scale the data that may fit appropriately in the range that is numeric in nature. The format that is described above is the most suitable one for the images that have the limited dynamic range. There is also the option for the reduction of the dynamic range in the FITAB format. Also the major thing that needs to be discussed is the QUANTIZE adverb that is used for the reduction in the dynamic range. The compression that is offered in the FITS disk files is used for the images that are written. This is an important feature that is available here that is the compression. It is important if the data needs to transfer over the internet. The format of the 16 bit is not proper for the images that are highly dynamic in nature. For the UV data the integer formats are also not allowed. The numbers that are representing your data or the information that is stored over the tape drive is recorded exactly as it is on the disk drive. It is actually in the floating point format. This feature is an important one in the development of the software as it guarantees the error quantization. Storing Data on Tape the tape is quite beneficial as compared to that of backing up the data over any hard disk drive or the floppy disk drive. The data storage can be done in an efficient way. The data is usually reliable over the tape drive. Some part of the FITS standard that is used by FITTP will not guarantee the UV data to be stored on the tape in the format that is compressed. What happens actually in the FITTP is that the data is expanded in the format that is not compressed or in an uncompressed format. Then the data is written over the tape. Usually in the process of the conversion the values may be sometime real or also may be imaginary. They are all stored in one packed number. They are then expanded into 3 values that are considered as the real i.e. one each for weight, imaginary and the real. |
