Tape Data Recovery
Difference between Disk and Tape Drives
Home > Disk Vs Tape Devices

Tape products are measured in terms of gigabytes. The tape subsystem consists of tape drives which can perform and housed in a small, medium, or large automated library. There are small library of 15 pieces of media that is needed to sell to the end user for data compression. DLT tape library as an example of the DLT tape cartridge which is rated at 80GB, and has a total capacity of 1.2TB. The Disk drives depends upon the size which is in the range of $0.02 to $0.05 per megabyte. The disk replacing tape subsystems is on a price basis, the storage appliance markets are excellent for disk drives.

The new market area is called as storage appliances which is defined as consumer set top and set back the digital camera storage can be used as a storage in laser printers applications, Appliance applications and sewing machines. As we know the fastest growing new markets are the set top boxes and digital cameras. The set top box has rapidly covered the market and has consumed approximately four million drives; the number of storage devices as we know is four to five per year per camera. There is a very large market for transportable, high capacity, inexpensive storage.

In determining which type of mass storage peripheral to use in a particular application, the type of data usage needs to be assessed. A popular concept is to classify data as Hot, Warm or Cold. The term Hot helps in determining whether the data implies an interactive use of the data among many users requiring a large number of accesses on a frequent basis to the data. This data should be used for fast access of mass storage device such as disk drives.

The warm data is similar to hot data, and the frequency is less and there is general desire to keep the data online in a mass storage device with medium fast access to disk drives, optical drives, and some types of tape libraries. Cold data is data that can be accessed and is kept online and will tend to keep in tape libraries. Tape is the effective storage medium on a price basis for large amounts of data. The fast way of getting a piece of data is to remove the data off-site.

The question arise at what price is we willing to pay for fast access. The small amounts of data rapidly can be read from the disk which is recorded around a circular disk and is perpendicularly across the tracks to reach the piece of data. Tape is recorded in tracks going down the length of the tape often 1200 to 1800 feet in length. The data needs to be achieved; tape is the clear winner and is particularly reasonable when the amount of data is involved.

The high capacity disk is fixed and not easily removable from a tape drive or from a tape library, are easily removed and replaced. Tape is faster than disk due to the constant recording nature of tape and its attendant high data transfer rate. Price is an issue and the disk of course pays for the fast data access capability, which may be needed. With tape we can afford for a very low storage cost for storing large amounts of data.

The data is open to the environment of the user. The right answer is mass storage to fit the in time versus price, regard-less of technology type. Data availability can certainly be increased within a system by implementing a data mirroring capability where each piece of data is recorded at least twice generally on separate disk subsystems. So, we can rely both on disk and tape for the data storage, but the disk can be used to store high range of data at affordable rates and can be used for the backup of the data.
