As comparison to the other storage devices the tape storage media offers a support to a wide variety of data backup techniques. The tape drive is professionally used for the purpose of backing up the data. It is still in consideration even after the emergence of the many storage media like the hard disk drives, floppy disks, Compact Disk, Digital Versatile Disk etc.

The above mentioned storage devices are considered as the most popular ones in comparison with the other storage devices. The other storage media devices that can be used for the backup and the archival process are the Zip drives, flash memory, etc. but in consideration and thorough comparison with the all forms of the storage media devices the tape device has stood apart and uniquely maintained itself as the storage device for the backup and the archival process.

It is in comparison cheaper than any other storage device that is available in the market presently. The tape technology was the first of its kind that provided the earlier generations of the computers a relatively large storage capacity and the cost price that was relatively low. Previously it was much expensive to maintain the library of a perpetually updated data. It was also of the nature of labor intensive.

The standards of the tape have gained relatively in the comparison along with the new storage technologies to keep the competition in the market as hot as possible. The shortcomings that were there in the earlier tape drives have been overcome and the new versions of the tape drive had paved the way for an emerging technological change in the market.

The new tape technologies are for example the Digital Linear Tape – DLT, Digital Audio Tape called as the DAT and the Quarter Inch Cassette – QIC and finally the Advanced Intelligent Tape or the AIT. The tape drive is also available in the format that is known as the helical scan 8mm. The important features of the tape drive should be kept in mind before the user considers buying a new tape drive.

The factors that should be kept in mind are the following new bandwidth, duty cycle, compatibility of the software driver that is to be used along side with the tape drive and at last but not least the capacity. The speed of access of the tape drive also plays an important role in considering the purchase of the tape drive.

Presently the DLT or the Digital Linear Tape technology is the leader in the market segment in association with the tape drive. The main advantage that is considered is the technological architecture of the tape drives that matters a lot for purchasing any tape drive.

The most important aspects that can be considered are the speed and the capacity of the tape drive. The speed of the tape drive is the data transfer that could take place per second. The reliability is also the factor that should be considered. The bit error rate is another aspect by which the integrity of the data can be measured. The tape drives are presently available cheaper rates as comparable to the other storage devices. The comparison can be made in regard with the features that are available with the tape drive to the cost of purchase.
