Alternative Tape Drive Backup
Home > Alternative Tape Backups

There is various tape backup alternatives, the tape backups is an old technology. This technology can be thought of a car engine. Even this technology is old, but some of the basic principle and shortcomings have been noticed. The DVD RAM drives are generally used for small and branch offices. In the early 1970s, tape media were used to store huge volumes of information as a backup. The magnetic tape media were not used because; it is sensitive to scratches, magnetic interference.

The tape mechanism technology is based on technologies which were invented before anyone ever has thought about computers. This technology could be thought of mechanical, which is based on moving parts that can break and jam. These days we are having low-end tape drive and it fails, no one will fix it for you. Suppose, if you have to purchase a new tape backup there is possibly that the new type of tape cassettes remains basically the same and the older tape drives may go smaller, and can contain information and can even support new technologies. There is no real alternative for the tape back in most of the market. However, at the low end of it, there are a few alternatives that will eat their way into the mainstream as the technology evolves.

Disk space has always been a problem with servers. Sure, if you are planning to buy a hard drive according to exchange stand edition database capacity you should also be kept in mind which one you knew and the memory capacity should never exceed 16GB. The virus attacks and database corruption issues are proved to have a 40GB disk drive on server and sometime might not be enough for the data to get stored.

Suppose you are having a large data queue because of some problem in the database. You may send an additional space to serve as temporary space for repairing a database. While this might still be true, disk drives are becoming cheaper while their capacity increases, mainly due to the popularity of the SATA IDE technology. Also, in a lot of small businesses you would find that the workstations are newer than the server. Since documents and mail are mostly stored on the server, you would get workstations with a lot of free disk space. Backup software vendors provides backup to file when the popularity of disk drive backup grew.

Backing of the disk drive is convenient when working projects required a lab so you could trace your steps of procedure. However the disk backup is not comparable to tape backup. There is little use of backing up of all important information to the same server when it might get crashed. There are some new ways that can overcome these limitations. You can backup to a different disk drive. Simply add a regular IDE drive to your server.

You can also buy a pair of IDE drives that connect fire wire and put them in the safe before you go home. The external USB drive is portable and could be easily used to transport data to a remote location. By using the Tape technology you can backup a server from a workstation. Whenever there is a need for backup there is a need to install active directory users and Computers exchange system manager on the remote computer from which you intend to perform the backup.

So, the tape backup provides various alternatives to store data in the most economical and reliable form, most of the companies uses the tape backup, which provide a good backup and it can also be backward compactable to most of the tapes.
